Outdoors | MY PHILOSOPY

Every day, I go outside and see some perfect light, or an amazing blossom on a tree, and I immediately want to go out and shoot. I've always been this way, and sometimes I pinch myself that I actually get to fulfil this creative urge in my day job.

Photographing your family outdoors is all about the fun, relaxed, spontaneous stuff that happens when you and your kids are unleashed. I don't like to put people in a spot, and do the 'say cheese' thing, but rather offer a series of prompts and fun games that will help me to capture you authentically. Jumping, running, dancing, grass-angel-making are all encouraged! You don't need to be extroverted and automatically comfortable in front of the camera however - it's my job to bring that out.

I shoot early in the morning or in the late afternoon (evening in summer) to capture your family in the best light possible. I've been in Oxfordshire for 18 years and my brain is crammed full of romantic, dramatic, and charming little nooks and crannies all over the county. You might have a location that is special to you, too, and I'm happy to shoot there if it's within 15 miles of Oxford.

Outdoors doesn't have to mean green, green, green, open fields or woods however. Maybe you're visiting or studying in Oxford and you want something to remind you of the beauty of the city and its architecture. I can take you on a walk around the city and capture you in the places you love best.

“We were so happy with the session and often take the photos out to look at them. You created such a relaxed atmosphere and I think that really shows in the photos! They are all so lovely and it was really difficult to pick the best ones to put up on the wall as we loved so many of them. You did a phenomenal job and we will surely contact you again at a later time for a new session when we are back in the UK!”

Outdoor Sessions are great for:

  • Families with small children 2 and above who need regular airing ;)
  • Large or extended family sessions
  • Individual child portraits
  • Families with babies who can sit independently

My Families often ask me...

What's the best time for an outdoor family photography session?

Between April and August, I shoot outdoor family sessions only in 'Golden Hour', which is about 1.5 hours before sunset. The light at this time is universally wonderful, flattering and glowy and means your children can run, play and move without me needing to put you in a fixed position in the shade - no one wants panda eyes from the harsh summer sun!

Golden Hour can be quite late in midsummer, so if you're worried about keeping your small ones up I'd recommend booking a session in the Autumn where I shoot in the mornings.

However, there are lots of ways you can make a sunset session go swimmingly with small children and I have lots of tips!

Can you suggest a good location for an outdoor family photoshoot in Oxfordshire?

I can. Whether it's magnolia trees in Spring, long grass in Summer, or vibrant autumn foliage, I keep track of what's in bloom all year round to give you a great selection of locations that are convenient for you.

Can we have a family photography session in Oxford City Centre?

Absolutely! I've lived in Oxford for 22 years and know all the best and most photogenic locations, including some favourites that are off the tourist trail.
